What is Body Screening?

The purpose of having a Body Screening examination is to detect abnormalities in the Lungs, Heart, Abdomen, and Pelvis. The exam can detect:

  • Pulmonary nodules in lungs (can detect small nodules that cannot be seen on a plain chest x-ray)
  • Coronary artery plaque (calcified) which determines your risk of coronary disease and heart attack
  • Aortic aneurysms (enlargement of the aorta)
  • Kidney stones
  • Cancers in the lungs, liver, colon, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and adrenal glands
  • Colonic diverticula (outpouchings of the colon which can lead to diverticulitis)
  • Hernias

Who should have a Body Screening exam?

Body Screenings are most beneficial for individuals who have one or more of the following risk factors:

  • History of smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Strong family history of heart disease and/or cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dl
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight
  • Asbestos exposure
