Preparing for Your MRI Scan
Preparation depends on the type of MRI exam you are having.
General MRI Preparation Guidelines:
- You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking before certain exams.
- Wear clothing free of metal (we provide gowns if needed).
- Remove all metallic items, including:
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Hairpins
- Eyeglasses
- Hearing aids
- Credit/debit cards
- Review the MRI safety questionnaire in the Patient Resources and Forms box below, prior to your appointment. This will help you prepare the information needed during the check in process.

What to Expect During Your MRI
Your MRI will be performed by a trained technologist.
During the scan:
- You will lie on a comfortable exam table.
- It is important to remain very still.
- You will hear rhythmic tapping or thumping sounds.
- You may feel mild vibrations.
- You can communicate with the technologist at any time via intercom.
Most patients tolerate MRI exams very well.
After Your MRI
Immediately after your scan:
- You may resume normal activities.
- You may eat and drink normally.
- You may continue regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
There is no downtime following a standard MRI exam.
