Preparing for Your MRI Scan
Preparation depends on the type of MRI exam you are having.
General MRI Preparation Guidelines:
- You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking before certain exams.
- Wear clothing free of metal (we provide gowns if needed).
- Remove all metallic items, including:
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Hairpins
- Eyeglasses
- Hearing aids
- Credit/debit cards
- Complete the MRI safety questionnaire prior to your appointment.

What to Expect During Your MRI
Your MRI will be performed by a trained technologist.
During the scan:
- You will lie on a comfortable exam table.
- It is important to remain very still.
- You will hear rhythmic tapping or thumping sounds.
- You may feel mild vibrations.
- You can communicate with the technologist at any time via intercom.
Most patients tolerate MRI exams very well.
How Long Does an MRI Take?
Most MRI scans take 45–60 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
When Will I Receive My MRI Results?
Your images will be reviewed by one of our experienced radiologists.
- Reports are sent to your physician within 24 hours.
- Your physician will contact you to discuss the results.
- For follow-up questions, please contact your provider directly.
Important MRI Safety Information
Because MRI uses a powerful magnet, certain implants or metal objects may pose a risk.
Please notify us if you have:
- Aneurysm clips
- Artificial heart valve
- Pacemaker or defibrillator
- Insulin pump implant
- Eye orbital prosthesis
- Inner or middle ear prosthesis
- Stents
- Tantalum mesh
- Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) device

If you have worked as a metal worker, you may require a precautionary eye X-ray before your MRI.
