What to Expect During Your Ultrasound

Your ultrasound will be performed by a trained sonographer.

During the exam:

  • You will lie comfortably on an exam table
  • A small amount of gel will be applied to your skin
  • A handheld transducer will glide over the area being examined
  • You may feel light pressure but no pain

In some cases, the radiologist may review images or perform additional scanning.

Most ultrasound exams take 30–90 minutes, depending on the area being evaluated.

Ultrasound is safe, painless, and does not require recovery time.

After Your Ultrasound

You may resume normal activities immediately after your exam unless your physician provides other instructions.

There is no downtime following an ultrasound exam.
