What is a CT scan?
A CT scan (Computed Tomography) is an advanced X-ray imaging technique that uses:
- A specialized CT scanner
- Low-dose X-ray technology
- Sophisticated computer processing
The result is highly detailed cross-sectional images — like “slices” — of areas such as:
- Brain
- Chest
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
- Musculoskeletal system
- Blood vessels
- Heart
- Lungs
CT imaging is often used to detect injuries, infections, tumors, vascular disease, and internal abnormalities.

Preparing for Your CT scan
Preparation depends on the type of CT exam you are having.
General CT Preparation Guidelines
You may:
- Be asked not to eat or drink after midnight
- Be given oral contrast to drink
- Receive IV contrast (contrast dye)
- Continue taking regular medications (unless instructed otherwise)
If Your Exam Requires IV Contrast:
- Blood work may be required prior to your scan
- You may experience a temporary warm sensation during the injection
- Final approval for IV contrast is determined by the radiologist
It is important to follow all instructions carefully to ensure complete and accurate results.
If you have preparation questions, call 414-282-4100.
What to Expect During Your CT scan
Your CT exam will be performed by a licensed radiologic technologist.
During the scan:
- You will lie on a comfortable scanner table
- The table moves slowly through the CT scanner opening
- You must remain still to ensure clear images
- You may receive breathing instructions (for chest or abdominal scans)
CT scans are painless and typically completed quickly.
How Long Does a CT scan Take?
Most CT scans take 15–30 minutes, depending on the type of exam.
Your technologist will inform you of the expected duration before the exam begins.
After Your CT scan
You may resume normal activities, diet, and medications unless instructed otherwise.
If you received IV contrast:
- Drink at least 8 ounces of water per hour for 3–6 hours
- This helps your kidneys eliminate the contrast dye
- You will not notice any change in your urine
When Will I Receive My CT Results?
Your CT images are reviewed by one of our board-certified radiologists.
- A detailed report is sent to your physician
- Your physician will discuss results with you
- Many results are delivered within 24 hours
